Fire in the Highlands

The city started us. The sea carried us on. The trees held us for a week. This one goes south and up — six thousand feet up, into a pink stone town that spends the whole week setting off fireworks for reasons of its own.

Three nights on a rooftop two minutes from the Parroquia, where everything is walkable and nothing is urgent. Then three nights off the map entirely: a mirrored house alone on a volcano, no staff, no neighbours, no shops — every meal cooked together, sunrise walks and long baths, one day given to massage and one to a kanna ceremony, and long hours blocked out for the two of us and no one else.

Then we climb into the volcano. The paved road gives way to dust and volcanic stone, the pink town shrinks below, and the air turns thin enough to drink. Casa Eterea waits near the top — a mirrored house half-hidden in the high scrub, all glass and copper and silence, looking out over ten thousand empty hectares. Inside, the bed faces the valley, the tub sits beside it, and the pool steams under the open sky. For three nights there is no staff, no menu, no schedule but ours: sunrise ridge walks, meals cooked together, long baths, and hours blocked out only for the Crane and her Raven.

And on the fifteenth, the whole country shouts at once. From our nest on the mountainside we may hear the cohetes burst over the Jardín and perhaps see the sky catch — but the real fireworks are private: the two of us wrapped in the dark, the volcano warm beneath us, the Milky Way spilled end to end above the glass.

A few mountain experiences still need arranging before we go up — after that, nothing can be arranged at all. Every day has a lighter and a fuller version — pick that morning, tucked inside each card.

Allow time after the 9:34 landing for immigration, baggage and meeting Javier before the hour-long drive. Two minutes from the Parroquia, Casa Arca waits with a rooftop pool terrace and the room for three nights. Dinner is eaten at DFW before boarding, not in San Miguel: buy two burrito bowls at the Terminal C/D Chipotle-style counter (brown rice, black beans, fajita veggies, guacamole, salsa, no cheese or crema), plus two bananas, two date-and-nut bars and two one-litre waters to carry on. The nest at altitude, night one of three
Unpack the provisions like moving into a nest. Night one is decided in advance so nothing has to be invented at altitude: black bean and mushroom tacos on corn tortillas with avocado, charred tomato salsa, lime and pepitas, with mango and dark chocolate after. The crane leads the pan, the raven warms the tortillas and pours the limeade. Eat outside if the wind allows, then fill the copper tub beside the bed and bathe together while the glass turns from mirror to window. The rest of the night is blocked out for sensual play and exploration, nowhere to be until sunrise.

Nourishing, quiet, and guided by the practitioner
Wake slowly. Cuddles, coffee in bed, and a long shower come first. The Crane decides what the two of you need this morning — maybe a light breakfast, maybe just tea and fruit, maybe only water — guided entirely by the practitioner's instructions on food, caffeine, medications and hydration. Heart-opening, guided, and entirely ours
Protect the full six-hour window for intention, the guided ceremony and unhurried integration. The Crane and the Raven take on their spirit forms here — she unfolds her long wings, he shakes out his black feathers, and the Moon Goddess arrives with her wizardly powers to open two hearts wider and draw them even closer. Somewhere in the middle of the work the Phoenix rises: old ash, new fire, the two of them reborn into the same nest. It is a ceremony of love, not just medicine. Set the room by 10:30: mats and cushions on the living-room floor facing the valley glass, two wool blankets, eye covers, a candle, the speaker charged, water and coconut waters within reach, phones off and in the bedroom. Follow the practitioner's guidance on food, caffeine, medications and hydration. Confirm transport, Casa access, exact protocol, medication interactions, food and hydration instructions before Monday. September 15 is El Grito night and the 16th is a national holiday, so every detail and supply must already be settled before going up.

No town, no crowd, just the dark valley and the glass
Dinner is simple and shared: rice bowls with black beans, roasted peppers and onion, avocado, salsa and lime, with warm tortillas on the side. Afterward take the two wool blankets to the pool deck; up here the Milky Way stretches end to end over the mirrored glass, and the only noise is the mountain. If the town celebrations reach this far, they are a bonus — but the night does not depend on them.

Sunday includes a full return-to-hotel shower and changing hour before lunch and El Charco. Once up the mountain there are no classes — mornings become ridge walks, baths and slow time together.

Our plates, always

Breakfast never repeats: Saturday brings rooftop chilaquiles and a cacao protein shake; Sunday a natural green protein smoothie and avocado toast; Monday papaya-coconut bowls; Tuesday a practitioner-approved morning guided by the Crane's instinct; Wednesday a slow morning in the nest chosen by the Crane; Thursday a refreshing sunrise breakfast after slow cuddles and love making. Everything is vegan by default, with eggs optional when wanted. No syrups or sweetened smoothie mixes. Aperi's tasting is confirmed fully vegan for Saturday, Bocaciega will keep Sunday's shared table plant-based, and Ki'bok remains the reliable all-vegan Sunday lunch. The Monday shop is the guarantee for every mountain meal.

Independence week

September 15 and 16 happen around us, not to us. El Grito is called from the balcony over the Jardin at 11:00 p.m. on the 15th — if the fireworks reach the mountainside we may catch them from above, but the night does not depend on them. The parade runs the morning of the 16th and most businesses close all day, which matters only because we are already up the mountain by then. Cohetes go off at odd hours all week; from the slope they sound like distant weather. Aperi is closed Tuesdays, which is why it sits on the Saturday.

Getting around

Most centre stops are walkable from Relox 18. Use cars for El Charco, Fábrica La Aurora, Escondido and every rural transfer; El Charco to Fábrica is not a practical walk. Saturday's Escondido taxi and Sunday's El Charco–Fábrica taxi are confirmed; last-minute changes or cancellations are not permitted once the service is set. Casa Eterea requires its own vehicle for the final road. Confirm Monday's market handoff and Thursday's shuttle-to-airport chain before leaving town. Backups: SMAride at contact@smaride.com, or BajioGo at Calle de Jesus 11.

The mountain stay

Three nights, not one. Monday's revised flow allows the post-yoga shower, a full 90-minute shop, loading time and an estimated 3:15–3:30 Casa arrival. Every meal, water, coffee and oat milk is bought on the way up. The kanna ceremony, hike and couples massage must be arranged before Monday; the Wednesday evening ritual needs only the room, warm oil and a few pastel cloths packed on the way up. Confirm signal, practitioner access, the mountain vehicle handoff and both shuttle times with the host.

Small practical things

Carry pesos in small notes for taxis, market stalls and tips, drawn from the Banorte or Intercam ATM on Calle Correo the first morning; many small places take no cards. Pack two large quick-dry towels for Escondido — none are provided. Cobblestones are uneven, so comfortable shoes for walking are worth it; evenings cool quickly at 6,100 feet, so bring something warm to match the cooling night. At 6,100 feet drink at least three litres each on Saturday and Sunday and add one electrolyte sachet a day; buy a twelve-pack of sachets before the trip. On Monday night stop eating by 8 p.m., be in bed by 10, and keep Tuesday morning to the practitioner’s guidance on food, caffeine, medications and hydration. Put the two beeswax candles, palo santo, eye covers and speaker in the Monday shop cart so they are already on the mountain.

Still open

Cell coverage and the exact market-to-house drive time at Casa Eterea. Confirm the kanna practitioner for Tuesday 11:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., guide availability for Wednesday's hike, and simultaneous massage therapists for Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Confirm the Thursday 7:30 a.m. shuttle and 9:00 a.m. airport-car wait time.

The fire becomes salt and light

Casa Eterea held the Crane and Raven inside the volcano. The next chapter brings them down to the Pacific, carrying that warmth toward five days at the edge of the continent.
